wind advisory wheeeeeeeee!
Wednesday, December 1, 2004
The National Weather Service has issued a WIND ADVISORY for New York City from noon to 9 p.m.
Around midday, winds will increase to 25 to 35 MPH with gusts of 45 to 55 MPH likely. The strongest gusts will occur
across exposed and elevated locations, such as bridges and between tall buildings. These winds have the potential to bring
down tree limbs and possibly uproot a few trees. Scattered power outages are a possibility as well.
* Bring in unsecured objects from patios and balconies
* Secure outdoor objects such as scaffolding and building materials that could blow away and cause damage or injury.
Wind speeds are increased dramatically as gusts push through narrow city streets between tall buildings, a phenomenon
known as the "urban canyon effect." The safest place to be in high winds is indoors, but if you must go out:
* Stay clear of roadways or train tracks
* Use handrails where available on outdoor walkways
* Watch for flying debris.
Strong winds can make driving difficult, especially in high profile vehicles and on bridges and overpasses.
* Drive slowly, maintain a firm grip on the wheel and keep a safe distance between vehicles.
